Cold Plunge in Boston — L Street Studio

45–55°F, RN-supervised, three minutes that reset your inflammation, mood, and focus for the rest of the day.

South BostonMedically SupervisedNurse-Owned Since 2018

Medically directed and founded by Olivia Kelly, NP, NP, RN — Licensed since 2003.

Cold water immersion is the oldest recovery tool in Boston — and our L Street studio sits a few blocks from the L Street Bathhouse where the tradition started. Our plunge is held between 45 and 55°F, filtered and sanitized between every guest, and supervised by an RN so you can push the edge safely. Three minutes triggers a norepinephrine surge that lasts for hours, calms systemic inflammation, and trains your nervous system to stay composed under stress. Plunge solo, run our Fire & Ice contrast protocol with the infrared sauna, or finish with a hydration IV in the same visit.

Benefits

Why patients choose Cold plunge

Inflammation and soreness

Cold immersion constricts vasculature and dampens the inflammatory cascade after hard training — the fastest way to take the edge off DOMS before your next session.

Focus and mood

A 2–3 minute plunge can raise norepinephrine substantially and lift dopamine for hours afterward. Most clients describe it as the cleanest mental clarity they get all week.

Stress resilience

Voluntarily staying calm in cold water trains your vagal response. Regular plungers report a measurably higher tolerance for everyday stress.

Sleep and recovery

Morning cold exposure sharpens your circadian signal, and the post-plunge parasympathetic rebound helps you fall asleep faster that night.

FAQ

Common questions

Where is your cold plunge in Boston?

Our cold plunge lives at the L Street (East Campus) studio — 47 L Street, South Boston. It's a few blocks from the L Street Bathhouse, the original home of Boston's cold-water tradition. The A Street studio does not have a plunge.

How cold is the water?

We hold the plunge between 45–55°F. That's cold enough to trigger the full cold-shock and norepinephrine response, and controlled enough that first-timers can stay in safely for two to three minutes.

How long should I stay in the cold plunge?

Beginners: 1–2 minutes. Most regulars: 2–4 minutes. Research on inflammation and mood benefits centers on roughly 11 minutes of total cold exposure per week, which you can spread across 3–4 sessions.

What are the benefits of cold plunging?

Reduced muscle soreness and inflammation, a sharp and long-lasting dopamine and norepinephrine lift, improved mood and stress tolerance, better sleep, and a trained vagal response that helps you stay calm under pressure.

Should I plunge before or after a workout?

After, and ideally not immediately after heavy strength training if hypertrophy is your goal — cold can blunt some muscle-building signaling. For endurance work, competition recovery, or back-to-back training days, plunge right away.

What is the Fire & Ice contrast protocol?

Fire & Ice alternates our infrared sauna with the cold plunge — typically 15 minutes hot, 2–3 minutes cold, repeated two to three rounds, always finishing cold. Contrast therapy drives circulation harder than either modality alone.

Can I pair a cold plunge with an IV drip?

Yes, and it's our most popular L Street combo. Plunge first, then settle into a hydration or recovery IV while your body reheats — you get the cold-shock benefits plus the fluid and micronutrient replacement in one visit.

Is cold plunging safe for everyone?

We screen for uncontrolled high blood pressure, cardiac conditions, arrhythmias, Raynaud's, pregnancy, and seizure history. Our RN staff supervises every plunge and stays with first-timers the entire time.

What should I bring?

Swimwear, a change of clothes, and flip-flops. Towels are provided. Skip the plunge on a completely empty stomach, and don't plunge right after alcohol.

How much does a cold plunge cost?

Single plunge sessions are our most affordable recovery service, with discounted Fire & Ice bundles and IV add-ons. Members save on every session — book directly at L Street below.
