There is nothing better than spending a fun night out, drinking & dancing with friends! That is, until the next day, when you have inevitably landed yourself in bed with a splitting headache, upset stomach, and the other terrible symptoms of a hangover. Hangovers can be totally draining and keep you feeling down & out for an entire day or more. Scientists have many theories for what exactly causes hangovers.
Dehydration & Electrolyte Imbalance
Dehydration is the most commonly believed cause of a hangover. Alcohol is a diuretic that increases urine production. This quickly dehydrates the body’s cells and diminishes electrolytes, causing thirst, dizziness, nausea, and overall weakness. The best way to combat the full body symptoms of a hangover is usually with hydration. You might choose water, a sports recovery drink, or the quicker method of IV hydration.
Sleep Troubles
Alcohol causes disruptions in the sleep pattern, meaning you are already at a disadvantage when you wake up after a night of drinking. Even though you may feel sleepy at the end of the night, you are not crawling into bed for the deep slumber you think you are. You might fall asleep, but you are less likely to enter the deep stage of REM sleep that leaves the body rested.
